Nexplanon May Cause Blindness and Serious Side Effects

Nexplanon is a rebranding of the female contraceptive Implanon and manufactured by Merck & Co. The birth control device, about the size of a match, is implanted under the skin of a woman's inner upper arm; where it slowly releases a synthetic hormone called etonogestrel; which prevents pregnancy over a period of up to 3 years. The device itself is made of a soft plastic composed of a chemical compound known as ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) or, (PEVA) short for polyethylene-vinyl acetate. Nexplanon is touted as being one of the most effective forms of contraceptive available; claiming to be over 99% effective, and despite its chemical make up its been said to be eco-friendly.

Is Nexplanon Safe

If you are a fan of Monsters In My Cabinet then you have read some of my other articles on the topic of birth-control devices like the Essure and Depo-Provera; this device is no different. If you have, then you know by now that pharmaceutical corporations will tell you anything you want to hear to sell their product. Since Nexplanon/Implanon's FDA approval it has been the subject of several lawsuits with allegations from women who've suffered complications from the implant migrating from their arm and becoming lost in their body's unable to be recovered. Other allegations include blood clots, heart attacks, strokes and getting pregnant.

The device is also under investigation along with a few other birth-control brands for causing pseudotumor cerebri; a condition that causes too much cerebrospinal fluid to build up inside the skull. The excess fluid causes pressure on the brain leading to intracranial hypertension and tumor symptoms; which include severe migraines, blurred vision, and permanent blindness. Another symptom of pseudotumor cerebri is tinnitus; ringing in the ears associated with hearing loss.

According to eHealthMe, (a database for searching FDA adverse event reports), 14,139 women reported having side effects when taking Nexplanon. Among them, there were 696 unplanned pregnancies, 3 reports of pseudotumor cerebri, 36 reports of blurred vision, 13 reports of blindness, and 4 reports of tinnitus. A quick browse through the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System will bring up a long list of adverse reaction reports from Nexplanon ranging from stillbirths to alopecia and more. This may be another reason why Implanon was rebranded as Nexplanon (besides it being radiopaque); to throw people off of their trail of adverse reaction reports, because when you combine the two the number of reports double. I'll include all of this data below.

Is Nexplanon Safe For The Environment

Nexplanon is not quite "eco-friendly" either. As I mentioned above Nexplanon is made of a soft plastic called polyethylene-vinyl acetate (PEVA), or (EVA). In a study conducted by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, the toxicity of the chemical was tested and proved to be just as toxic as PVC; another widely used plastic known to be hormone-disrupting and carcinogenic.

The bottom line is, hormones are the building blocks of human biology. They determine your physical and mental health. Nexplanon and Implanon are both synthetic hormonal contraceptives and when introduced into the human body, like all hormonal birth-control methods they will disrupt your natural hormonal balance affecting you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Combined with the chemically produced materials these devices are made of, the risks are doubled. Trading health for the ability to not get pregnant is like making a deal with the devil.
